Here are notes on some of the supporting data: for number of lines of Netscape and of GPL'd code see the news group news://news.mozilla.org/netscape.public.mozilla.license and look at a message dated 12 Mar 98 19:19:57 GMT from dark@xs4all.nl (Richard Braakman) with subject How much GPL'd code is out there? Kevin Mayer on 01/25/99 01:13:50 PM To: Brough Turner cc: Subject: RE: Whoops - On the Horizon column for March Thanks Brough. The revisions arrived just in time. (I sent the column to the art dept. this morning.) It struck me the column was another powerful expression of one of your favorite themes, namely, the efficacy of distributing the work of innovation throughout a community of developers or engineers. Particularly striking was your comment that with the Internet, the open source approach can lead to astonishingly rapid development, compared to traditional commercial software development. It put me in mind of a physical equivalent, of how a reaction or process may be accelerated when the surface areas of the reactants are maximized. (Lumps of coal may glow, but coal dust is explosive.) With development practices shaped by the Internet and open source conventions, the "surface area" exposed to developers may be greatly increased, yielding dramatically faster (explosive?) results. By the way, we substituted the word "infuses" for the words "finds its way into" in the title. (The idea is not just to introduce one thing into another, but for the introduction to instigate some change.) ------------------------------------------------------ See you at: CTI EXPO Spring, May 24-26, 1999, Washington, D.C.
